The patented shielded EZ-RJ45® Cat5/6 connector simplifies twisted pair terminations by allowing the wires to be inserted through the connector and out the front for EZ verification of wiring sequence. Applications with RF problems or grounding requirements usually specify to use shielded cable & shielded connectors.
Why an external ground? To accommodate the larger size cables that are too large for the internal ground type design which has a max cable jacket OD of 0.260". The external ground type design can accommodate a cable jacket OD up to 0.0280+". The individual conductor max OD is 0.041" for both external and internal.
